Angels & Mara
29 October 2026—28 February 2027
Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, Bangkok
We are delighted to announce Margret Eicher’s participation in the 5th Bangkok Art Biennale, ANGELS & MARA. Presenting six monumental media tapestries created between 2014 and 2023, Eicher explores the transformation of visual culture in the digital age, bringing her distinctive artistic language into dialogue with the Biennale’s theme.

Margret Eicher is a German media artist, internationally renowned for her digitally woven Medientapisserien® (Media Tapestries). Following her studies at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, she evolved from the analog Copy Art movement to create large-scale Jacquard tapestries that fuse art history, mass media, and digital culture. Combining historical iconography with imagery drawn from contemporary visual culture, Eicher constructs socially critical narratives that examine power, spectacle, surveillance, and the politics of images in the digital age.
Across the six works presented at BAB 2026, produced between 2014 and 2023, Eicher traces the rapid transformation of visual culture over the past decade, reimagining historical traditions through the lens of the digital age. Assunta and La Grande Bouffe appropriate Renaissance and Baroque compositions, infusing them with icons of consumerism, gaming, and mass media to create layered reflections on contemporary society. Then We Take Berlin juxtaposes the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with Berlin's war-scarred landscape, transforming a site of historical trauma into a meditation on collective memory, media mythology, and cultural resilience. It's A Digital World 1, 4, and 5 visualize the myths of our networked age, charting the shift from the digital as novelty to a reality shaped by algorithms and artificial intelligence.
Workshop with Margret Eicher
Artistic Appropriation of Media Images
6. November 2026, 12—3 p.m.
Goethe-Institut Thailand, Bangkok
Organised in conjunction with the Bangkok Art Biennale 2026, this workshop forms part of the Goethe-Institut Thailand’s ongoing programme strand dedicated to digital art.
About the Workshop
Images from advertising, journalism, popular culture, and social media shape how we perceive the world. In this workshop, Berlin-based artist Margret Eicher will introduce participants to her artistic strategies for appropriating, combining and recontextualising such images.
Drawing on examples from her practice, the workshop will trace her development from photorealistic drawing and photocopy collage to digitally composed media tapestries. Participants will discuss how images circulate through digital media, how their meanings change through repetition and recombination, and how artistic appropriation can reveal or disrupt their political and manipulative structures. The session will combine an artist's presentation, discussion and exchange with participants.
