Convergence of Expressions: Yafeng Duan's Breath of Nature and Gulnur Mukazhanova's Post-Nomadic Odyssey Embark on a journey into the artistic realms of Asia with Galerie Michael Janssen Berlin at Asia NOW 2023.
Duan's ethereal canvases breathe life into the elemental Qi, while Mukazhanova's feltscapes unravel the complexities of post-nomadic identities. In Jazz Mang’s work purposely placed patina and colored sections combine to form a large, abstract whole. Landscapes emerge from color sediments, at times applied vigorously with a spatula, at times cautiously brushed. Patterns, repetitions, floral elements, which, like climbing plants, seem to lend structure to the canvas. The work of south Korean-born Jazz Mang is always one thing: expressive. Join us in this captivating exploration of art and culture.
The centrepiece of the project, an exhibition of 14 contemporary artists curated by Slavs and Tatars, will explore the role of textiles in the region's cultural practices. The weaving of ikats, an example of a vernacular textile, is often referred to using the Persian word “abr-bandi”, which means “to knot clouds”. In the 21st century, at the heart of the information age, this knotting of clouds suggests another horizon: that of data and digitisation, as much as that of dyes and fabrics.
